Questions about the battery of an e-bike

What is the lifespan of my battery?

As with all other batteries, the ones in our e-bikes, are subject to wear. Battery capacity decreases over time, however it’s impossible to say exactly how long each battery will last.

Does KOGA recommend leaving e-bikes on the charger for as long possible?

SHIMANO

Shimano recommends charging the battery up to 70% if you intend storing your bike for an extended period of time. If this is not the case and you intend using your bike soon, then recharge the battery before your next ride. A 4A charger will charge a 504 Wh battery up to 80% in 2.5 hours. It takes 5 hours to charge it fully. There is therefore no need to leave it charging any longer.

BOSCH

For BOSCH e-bikes from KOGA, please refer to the BOSCH recommendations in the instruction manual. BOSCH does not recommend leaving the battery connected to the charger for extended periods. They recommend charging the battery up to about 60% (3 to 4 LEDs of the charge indicator on) before storing it for an extended period of time.

Is my e-bike’s battery fire-safe?

The batteries we use on our e-bikes meet stringent European safety standards and have been extensively tested for fire-safety. Despite this high standard of safety, there is always a very remote chance that the battery will become defective and cause a fire. This risk arises particularly if the battery is used incorrectly.

Will my bike lights stay on even when the battery is flat?

Yes, your bike lights will stay on thanks to the battery’s reserve capacity.

What is the best way to charge my e-bike?

Always follow the charging advice that came with your e-bike. A dry room whose temperature is between 10 and 25 degrees Celsius is perfect for charging the battery. For safety reasons, we recommended charging the battery near a smoke detector. Also keep the battery in sight while it is charging. For example, we do not recommend recharging it unattended in your home at night.

Will my e-bike also work with another battery?

Yes it will, provided that your bike is fitted with Bosch, Emotion or Shimano technology. For security reasons, the batteries on e-bikes that use ION technology are not interchangeable. The KOGA dealer can however register an extra battery to another ION bike. It is not possible to register the same battery to more than one bike.
